Hi! My name is Taffy, and I am a recently remarried mom of eight kids. We absolutely love the Social Thinking program, and it has changed our lives in helping us to deal with rigid thinking in our home. I also find a lot of extra ideas on Pinterest and other places on the web. There are tons of hands-on activities included. There is so much support and so much learning that happens with this program. The program is split into levels for early learners and middle school learners, and recently they have added a new program for the adolescent group and into high school. The top four strategies that we have learned and implemented in our home: Once they had the language and the ability to identify what their social thinking struggles were, they automatically began to call out and help each other with the Thinkables’ ways to overcome and defeat the Unthinkables. It was so much fun going through this list and listening to my children discuss what Unthinkables attack them on a regular basis. They shut down a person’s ability to think, to socialize in appropriate ways, and to react in expected manners. Rock Brain is the leader of the Unthinkables.

During the entire program the children learn how to deal with each unthinkable by using the strategies they learn from the Thinkable superhero team. The team of Thinkables are the techniques used to help us learn how to overcome the bad guys, the Unthinkables. We also get to meet the Superflex team of Thinkables. He learns about Superflex and decides that he would like to be like his hero. The books introduce you the a little boy who has a hard time navigating his social town. The Superflex curriculum is based off of comic books that were developed specifically to address social thinking challenges. We have used this curriculum off and on now for two years, and my son’s ability to get out of rigid thinking and into a flexible thinking or a learning mindset has really improved. Social thinking skills and abilities are skyrocketing, and his verbal emotional language has improved immensely. Last year I was introduced to an amazing curriculum that was written to help directly with rigid thinking issues. Rigid thinking can greatly affect a child’s ability to socialize appropriately, as well as their ability to learn. It can also be caused from literal thinking patterns. They can become combative verbally when they are sure they are 100 percent right and you are 100 percent wrong.

Rigid thinking goes along with black and white thinking, i.e. Their brain becomes rigid, and problem solving diminishes. They are not able to think outside or act outside of whatever box they have found themselves in. Rigid thinking is when someone gets stuck on an idea, thought, behavior, or fear. Part of dealing with a child who is on the spectrum is rigid thinking.
